Weekly Recap - 20 August 2017
The numbers:
4h25m analog, 42m RockSmith. 59h total.
Downpicking 168-176 bpm, alternate picking 216-224 bpm.
Wanted Dead or Alive x2 [double @ 112], Blackbird x3+Rec [84-88], Dust In The Wind x4 [84-92], Communication Breakdown x2 , Black Dog x2, Stairway To Heaven x0.
RockSmith: Zombie x1, Give It All x1, Swing Life Away x1.
I got sucked into a video game -- Prey [2017]. It's definitely a Shock/DX style game where you have options in front of you for how to complete the game, where you get choices, and where you get the chance to flatten the other guy by throwing really big boxes at them. It shows that I got sucked into a game, because I only logged 5h this week, not 7-8h that I've been doing for the past six weeks. Eh, the break was good, right?
Gave my first guitar lesson to a friend this past week. Ninety minutes of what's where, getting into a spider stretch, and easy chords (Em, E, Am). They promptly got swallowed up by work.
I got some new bridge pins -- ebony for the Martin and brass for the Alvarez. I'll pop them in when I change strings, probably October and November respectively, if I make good on three months for each set of uncoated strings. I also put all my string sets together in one box ... jeez, I have too many.
I recorded a fault-heavy rendition of Blackbird, which I shared with a couple friends. Gotta work on it more before I post it up to Soundcloud. But I'm playing both Blackbird and Dust In The Wind either from off a lead sheet, or without a sheet. I still need to focus on a couple pieces that I goof on, or don't accurately remember.
I adapted the Communication Breakdown riff and verse for the downpicking exercise. If I can keep that at 176 or higher, then I can hold the 172 for the recorded tempo well enough. The solo is kind of blistering at that tempo, and I haven't started playing that to a metronome.
Next week, more practice, more focus on the songs than on exercises. Two thirds through the month, definitely feeling like I'm more than two thirds along (though I did start a week early ... but am doing six songs instead of the four I'll aim for in following months).
